Marilyn and Sherilyn

Dear Linda,

I have to stick to Linda, I’m afraid, even though I know you changed your name, because when I see Sherilyn splashed all over the papers, I like to pretend it’s not you. Not my daughter. You were such a quiet and obedient child it’s beyond me to believe you could have committed any crime, let alone this one. Since this bombshell exploded in my head, quite a lot is beyond me, frankly. Sometimes picking up a tube of toothpaste in the morning is beyond me.

When the two of you were little, I had to keep reminding myself that you were sisters, because you could have been beamed down from different planets. Ann Marie was such a poppet right from the beginning that even her naughtiness was part of her charm. She could be a right little madam sometimes, bless her heart, Do you remember that time when you brought home a cake you’d made at school with ‘too dere mummy I love you’ on the top in blue icing? And Annie carried on and on at you till you gave it to her? She always wanted what you had, but you didn’t complain. You’re like Daddy that way, he’s not a complainer either. But then, seeing Ann Marie’s face light up when you handed over the cake made it all worth while, didn’t it? We used to call her Little Miss Sunshine because she could brighten up the darkest day. You could never be depressed when she was around.

It’s probably my fault we’ve been out of touch for so long, but I’m kept so busy with Annie’s brood I’m always scurrying here and there with one or other of them. And then Daddy’s under my feet all day since he retired, although thankfully he spends a lot of time doing his thing in the study and making his model airoplanes, but he’s one more person to think about.

I don’t know how people pass the time in prison of course. No one in our family has ever been in one, so you’re something of a first. I hope you’re keeping busy, because when you’ve got time on your hands you can brood and things can get ugly. They do for me anyway. I can usually cheer myself up by making one of my famous cakes, so I made a pineapple upside-down cake yesterday, even though I’m supposed to be on a diet. Annie and I have been doing the tomato sandwich diet recently and I’ve managed to shed two and a quarter pounds. As usual, she’s better than me – she’s lost six and a half – but it doesn’t bother me. I was obviously meant to be a porker. Daddy hates it when I talk like that. He says, ‘You’re not a porker, Marilyn, you’re just well built – and lovely with it,’ but he’s just being kind. I expect prison food is pretty inedible – you see it in films being dumped in those metal
